  1. Begin by peeling and dicing up all your fruit and placing them in one large serving bowl.
  2. Make the dressing by adding mint leaves, the juice of one orange (or a cup of regular orange juice) and a few tablespoons of light brown sugar to a blender. Blend until smooth and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
  3. Combine all the fruit together and toss in more chopped mint leaves. When ready to serve, drizzle the dressing over salad and toss to combine. Serve chilled and enjoy.

Can I use frozen fruit?

We like to be the cool parent here at Delish and never want to say no. but in this case, you can't use frozen fruit! Because fruits are mostly water, their cell structures change when frozen: when water turns to ice, it expands as its cells rearrange themselves into a tight crystalline formation. When you bring frozen fruit to room temperature, you may notice that a lot of the fruit looks very deflated and mushy&mdashand that's because that crystalline arrangement during freezing punctured through the cell walls of the fruit, causing their collapse once defrosted. So unless you like mushy fruit salad that borders on fruit soup.

Can I prepare the salad ahead of time?

You can, but hold off on dressing it until right before serving and keep your prepared and cut fruits well covered and refrigerated until it's time to serve. We recommend prepping the fruit within 4 hours of serving&mdashany longer and you'll start to see shriveling and oxidation on the cut fruit. If you want to prevent your chopped apples from browning too much, toss them with a tablespoon of lemon juice and put them on the bottom of the fruit bowl to reduce their contact with air.

A thing that got him sent to the office in grade school, a thing that got him in trouble with girlfriends in college, the thing our kids love most about him to this day. And while I can't say I loved him laughing out loud while I was stewing in the other room, I do appreciate his love of laughter.

Because, as they say, laughter really is the best medicine. Laughter. and FRUIT! Especially when that fruit resembles a rainbow. Which is why I LOVE this time of year. because fresh fruit is about to become plentiful. and we're all about to become really happy.

I love this fruit salad. not just because of all the bright rainbow colors, but because of the little something extra. The sauce! I always enjoy a good Ambrosia salad, especially at Easter get togethers, but I'm telling you - this is BETTER! And better for you. Because it's made with Greek yogurt! Is fruit salad a dessert?

While many people would consider this berry salad a “fruit salad” side dish, it is definitely sweet enough (because of the sugars that naturally occur in the berries) that it could be served as a dessert as well.

Recipe for Seven Layer Salad: Instructions

Alright, it’s time to get to the good stuff. Here is my step-by-step breakdown of how to make the classic 7 layer salad recipe.

First, take one half a head of iceberg lettuce and cut it up into small pieces. Spread it as a layer on the very bottom of the bowl. Top the lettuce with six green onions (thinly sliced). Feel free to add green peas and celery.

If you are waiting to serve the dish, you can add in frozen green peas (you don’t want to use canned peas or it will make the dish too soggy). As a matter of fact, it’s best to just avoid using any canned food products in this dish.

In a separate container, mix together one-half a cup of mayonnaise, one-half a cup of sour cream, and a tablespoon of sugar. Make sure to blend the sugar, sour cream, and mayonnaise beforehand to ensure an evenly sweet spread (and yes, I did say white sugar, sour cream, and mayonnaise).

A real crowd pleaser

While these sound like three ingredients that should never be mixed in a bowl, trust me. It ends up being one of the most delicious dishes you have ever tried. The flavor that hooks you lies in this creamy dressing. It pairs so well with the crisp iceberg lettuce and the topping of green peas.

Your friends, neighbors, kids, and co-workers will be hooked. Set the mixture aside. We are going to add it on at the end, topped with some shredded cheddar cheese and fully cooked bacon.

Add in those raw, green onions, cooked salty bacon, and cheddar cheese, and you have yourself a delicious piece of heaven. But I am getting ahead of myself. This dish does require a little bit of patience.

Next, you are ready to add some sliced, hard-boiled eggs on top of the iceberg lettuce, green peas, onions, bacon, and cheddar cheese. Do you think this sounds good? I sure do.

Top it off

Alright, it is time for the grand finale. You are almost done with your 7 layer salad recipe. You are going to add your three-ingredient salad dressing on top of all of the other layers, but feel free to add in another layer of veggies before we do.

It’s always fun to improvise a little on a recipe to make it more your own. Once all the veggies have been added in, it is time to pour the dressing on top. The sugar helps to sweeten it up quite a bit.

Feel free to add another layer of shredded cheese (some parmesan cheese is always a nice touch!), and even another sprinkle of green peas and bacon if you would like for a garnish.

Cool the seven layer salad overnight or for a few hours. Just try not to eat it as soon as you finish making it. This trifle dish is more than worth the wait.
